Square Enix has a different kind of Final Fantasy on its hands, and critics are into it. Final Fantasy Resonance launches October 22 with an 85 on Metacritic, based on PS5 reviews published as of October 20.
What is Final Fantasy Resonance?
A turn-based RPG in HD-2D, the pixel-art-meets-3D style that made Octopath Traveler famous. Square Enix calls it the first Final Fantasy made in HD-2D, developed with studio Lancarse.
The story is based on the first arc of Final Fantasy Brave Exvius, a mobile game, rebuilt as a full console RPG. There’s plenty of fan service too: Cloud, Tidus and the Warrior of Light show up as “Visions,” and you can take on Sephiroth in an optional fight.
What are the reviews saying?
- Metacritic: 85, “generally favorable.”
- Famitsu: 9/9/9/9, for 36 out of 40.
- DualShockers: 100.
- Game Rant: 90.
- Push Square: 80.
- VGC: 60, the lowest of the big scores.
How long is it?
Depends who you ask. Square Enix says the main story takes at least 30 hours, and up to 40. Famitsu puts it at 20 to 30 hours for the story and around 70 hours if you do everything.
How much is it and where can you play it?
- Standard: $49.99 / £49.99 / €59.99.
- Digital Deluxe: $59.99 / £54.99 / €69.99, with an extra item pack.
- Collector’s Edition: $209.99, with an art book, a four-CD soundtrack and more.
It’s out on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch and PC. One thing to know: the Switch and Switch 2 versions are sold separately, there’s no upgrade path between them, and you can’t transfer saves either way.
In the US, the PS5 and Xbox versions unlock at midnight Eastern (9pm Pacific on October 21). Other regions may unlock at local midnight.
Why it matters
It’s the cheapest way to try a new Final Fantasy this year, and there’s a free demo on every platform. It covers the opening through the end of Chapter 1, about 3 to 5 hours, and your save carries over to the full game. Try it before you buy: if you like turn-based combat, there’s a good chance it’ll hook you.
